Help Needed Installing NVIDIA Drivers on XP
I've heard so many conflicting opinions on how to install a new Nvidia driver in XP that I've come to the conclusion that everybody does it differently:-)))) For example, on Nvidia's site, in the user's guide for the new 40.72 detonator, it tells you to uninstall your present Nvidia driver from add/remove programs

I run both the nv and nvidia drivers (1.0-1251) at 1600x1200. Why else buy a 19" monitor? Your nvidia manufacturer drivers are *old*. Why are you running both XFree drivers (nv) *and* NVidia's own (nvidia)? Because the nvidia drivers caused weird stuff to happen every once in a while: whenever the cursor is

I tried using kernel 2.6.24-gentoo-r2 -- however the nvidia drivers version 100.14.19 complains that it is unable to determine the kernel version. I did some googling, but saw no solution to this problem, but it seems others are having difficulties with this also. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, for me, I changed the settings to "Extra"; when I closed the panel Ubuntu said it needed to install some Nvidia graphic's drivers to get the desired effect; I clicked OK and the drivers were installed. The computer then needed to be rebooted, when it started Ubuntu told me that those Nvidia drivers

If I was to purcahse a GeForce 4 MX440, would I have to install the new video drivers or would the current "nv" drivers suffice my needs? I do not need stellar game play, but just enough so I can have an enjoyable 3d experience. AFAIK, the nVidia drivers are required for 3D acceleration to work.

1) I've noticed a problem with Nvidia's Detonator drivers..... I'm running an AMD Athalon K7, 600 mhz... with a Diamond Viper 770, Nvidia TNT2 card. Originally, lots of games would not run on my computer (Grand Theft Auto 2, Omikron: Nomad Soul) that used to run in Win98, because of the video driver.

This is bad, bad practice, and the non GPL code is why a Linux kernel with the NVidia drivers is reported as "tainted" when you load the drivers. Solution, sell the nividia crap on ebay and get something supported (GPL driver), if you don't want to limit yourself to some distro kernel. If you need 3D acceleration

nVidia Driver Installation Question
I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS AGP8x card and I have created a component for the driver using the .inf file. This is not the detonator driver, but rather the driver that dell provided. I used the one from dell because the one from Nvidia was in a .exe file. Anyway, I successfully componentized the driver,

Still others tell me that you uninstall the drivers using the install/uninstall option in windows tools. Now I enjoy all the games above, so I am very hesitant to EXPERIMENT and end up with nothing. I have also heard that the 40 and up version of Nvidia drivers will make my older games like Falcon 4 look terrible.
